Serif Typefaces

The use of serifs, the pointed elements at the end of strokes in serif fonts, is believed to date to their use in Roman inscriptions.

Design Uses

For printed pieces, serif fonts are frequently used for body text since the added visual clues make them easier to read, especially at small sizes. However, for computer applications, sans-serif fonts are often recommended for body text due to the coarse resolution of computer monitors which can make serif fonts difficult to render at small sizes.

The serif fonts presented here are recommended for use as body text and, in the case of the bolder fonts, as display and headline type.

Note: All font samples were produced in a standard manner and size. The differences you see (such as chopped text) are the result of design differences between typefaces.
